Up is a 2009 Disney Pixar film directed by Pete Docter that starts by showing the story of Carl and Ellie from their childhood to her death. Having spent twenty minutes ripping your heart out and turning you into a blubbering wreck, the film then tells how Carl attaches balloons to his house and drifts away with an unwilling stowaway, Wilderness Explorer Russell. Up was only the third animated film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
Gran Torino is a 2008 film directed by and starring Clint Eastwood as Walt Kowalski, a bitter old man following the death of his wife. Walt is a Korean War veteran and expresses racist opinions which does not make him happy when a Hmong family move in next door. However, he finds himself getting involved with the family. A sweet and thoughtful film, Gran Torino shows that Eastwood is still one of the top directors working today.
