Episode 1-48 Heart of Darkness, Apocalypse Now and The Doors

episode 1-48

Heart of Darkness is a 1899 novella by Joseph Conrad that originally appeared in Blackwood’s Magazine, telling of Marlow’s journey up the Congo to track down the rogue Ivory trader Kurtz. Although Conrad’s language may seem politically incorrect to modern ears, the novella was an attack on imperialism and racism.

Apocalypse Now was a 1979 film directed by Francis Ford Coppola from a script by Coppola and John Milius. This loose adaptation of Heart of Darkness transplanted the story to the Vietnam War with Willard (Martin Sheen) tracking down Kurtz (Marlon Brando) with orders to kill the rogue officer. The film was judged to be a folly due to the cost and the problems that beset that production (wonderfully detailed in the documentary Hearts of Darkness), but was a hit upon release and has since come to be seen as a classic of cinema.

The Doors was an American rock group formed in 1965. The lyrics of lead singer Jim Morrison (1943-1971) provided a dark counterpoint to the Flower Power scene of the late sixties. The group continued for two years after Morrison’s alleged death and have reformed on several occasions but had little success without Morrison.
